i need a bit of help with getting a wee bit more bhp outta my mx5 1.6. i live in northern ireland and there is really no one over here that specialises in mazda tuning. i bought my wee 89 eunos 6months ago and have had it out nearly every track day! in standard form, it was fairly healthy and went well, but i bought a HKS 1.6 turbo kit, upgraded the radiator and made a intake pipe for it, i'm currently in the process of moving the air filter as when it was rolling roaded with the bonnet closed it was only gettin 151bhp but with the bonnet up it got 164.7 at the wheels.
so the guy advised me to get an intercooler and move the filter as this would make all the difference! any advice u guys can give me to get sum more bhp? what make of intercooler wud be best and does any one make any pre-shaped piping for it?
or is there any other things that wud help the hks kit?!
wud any pic's help?

cheers

Almost no one in the USA knows diddly squat about that kit, especially the 1.6 verson. In fact there are only a couple of those in the USA that I know of. Actually your results are quite decent. 150-160hp is respectable for a non intercooled kit using minimal controls. The F-Con mini fuel computer works quite well when used as designed.

There was a guy on .net from the UK who managed to squeeze 230-240 whp IIRC out of his HKS turbo. If you PM me I can probably dig up his name. Obviously an IC and some additional controls are the ticket to more power.

Wow, I'd love to have 164.7 hp at the wheels. Sounds great for a non-intercooled 1.6. Dangerous even?

With the worthless no-name tires the last owner put on mine I'd have a little traction problem probably. Working my way to the turbo club slowly....

whats an ic? i had to put bridgestone potenzas on the rear to cope witht the extra power lol i'll pm u now for that name!
don't get me wrong it goes well but i would like it to be touching 180bhp. . . hehe
to give u's a comparison, its the same speed as an honda S2000 to 100mph, its the weight that makes it quick! lol
but i no its capable of more. . . lol
if it helps the kit uses a garret t2 turbo with a plug in hks ECU box.
wot sorta intercoolers do u guys use on ur tubo conversions?

I love that kit, i've seen them on ebay but haven't seen anyone with it installed. That's the way i'm going after I build my FM Westfield, assuming the turbo will fit in there.

How much boost are you running?

The HKS kit, if used as designed, is a very simple reliable setup that makes decent power. It is built for 5-6 psi and I would presume thats what is being run here.

These are quite rare in the USA on a 1.6 due to the Greddy being a cheapo alternative. The Greddy is a more easily upgraded alternative but I prefer the Garrett water & oil cooled turbo and the better quality manifold this kit offers. The fuel computer is not adjustable but it does work and hasnt any issues. No need for the AFPR/Bipes band aid crap needed with a Greddy.

If youre on a really serious upgrade path then there are better choices then an HKS.
But as a simple bolt on kit that makes a Miata drive about the way it should its great.

Isn't it insane to run a turbo w/o IC?

Not really. While it's a pretty good idea, as long and you're not over-working the turbo you can still keep the intake temps at a reasonable rate. Also, an over-sized intercooler or crazy piping will give you worse performance than no intercooler.

You could just try water injection. :)

did the kit include injectors? fuel pump? rising rate fmu?

you definitely should get an intercooler, something along the lines of 2" inlet and outlet.

what size is the downpipe? for power, go with a 2.5" downpipe all the way back out to the exhaust. definitely should see improvements there.

as ds said, a thermo jacket for the turbo might help as well, but i doubt it ahahhaha if you want to do this, you might as well wrap the whole downpipe too.
