On my 2003, it was a simple firm twist, remove, replace. On the 04 Mazdaspeed I can't get it to turn for the life of me. Feels like I'm seriously going to break something by twisting so hard. Is there something differs on this model? Or if not, is there any real way to do damage by twisting the $&#** out of it to get it to budge? Yikes....

should just twist off, maybe PO lock-tite it? Only choice is the risk it and use more force.

OK...futher investigation noted that there is a screw on cap at the bottom of the knob...when lowered it reveals two hex screws that tighten onto the shaft. Got those loose and it came right off. Nothing like this on my 2003. Anyway...thanks for the help. And yes, lefty loosey worked best :)

definitely not a stock knob, hopefully you didn't damage the threads. No biggie if you did, can re-thread easily, and the tool is cheap.
