Could be. My car has done something similar to what you're describing since I bought it. Changed my tranny fluid and turret oil, rebuilt the shifter, didn't help. Mine is worst when it's cold, I have to be extremely careful when I'm driving to class on cold mornings.

 

Probably so. Mine is a newer '03 transmission. Just got swapped a few months ago. Might just take it back into get checked.

 

My dad's 94 Land Rover had the same issue. Went into gear fine, just ground every time unless your double clutched. Tried changing fluid but it didn't help. Turned out to be syncros, and he ended up selling the car to avoid any more issues with it.

 

My car does this when it's cold, it doesn't grind, but it feels like trying to pull a butter knife through rubber, it goes in, just takes a second, it literally only does this the first 1-2 shift of the day, every other time it acts just like normal. Unless I let it sit for a 6+ hours, then it will do it again, but only just that first shift.

 

It's probably synchros, we usually try a gear oil called Swepco in crunchy transmissions. It's not cheap, $20-ish per litre in Canada, but it's fixed a lot of grinding transmissions and saved the owners the cost of a transmission rebuild/replacement.

 

Where could I possibly get a liter of Swepco 717 gear oil? I'm also going to call back the place I got the swap at. I didn't have this issue with my old transmission.

 

Try emailing Swepco and asking about sellers in your area, or call performance/specialty shops near you and ask if they sell, or know somewhere that does.

 

My 2nd gear grinds in the morning if I dont let it warm up for a couple of minutes. Also if you feel like its getting worse, just shift from 1st > 3rd until the car fully warms up.

 

I have the same problem on cold mornings and after it's been sitting, but I'm thinking it's the clutch master/slave that's the problem.

Anybody else have a lot of neutral play in their clutch pedal?

 

change your transmission and differential fluid to a good synthetic. I always recommend ENEOS gear oil or Redline MT-90. It makes all the difference and the shift from 1st to second will be like night and day.

 

Well the transmission has a Redline MT-90 fluid when it was replaced. I'm going to actually email Swepco about transmission fluid for purchase.

 

Mine started doing this after MT90 fluid change. Much worse when cold, seems fine when it gets worm. I find think that fluid likes being cold.
