So about two weeks ago, my car started burning a lot of oil. As in, enough smoke to make Cheech and Chong envious...it was bad. Decided that I didn't want to guess whether it was valve stem seals or rings (or both) and found another engine to drop in. Picked the new (used) engine up this past week and have been babying the car to and from work.

After work today, started pulling everything apart. I could probably have had the old engine out and the new one in tonight already, but I decided to really take my time and clean things up while in there.

Big huge thanks go out to Brad (NA3Turbo) to coming and helping me out. He's been doing a wonderful job of cleaning and tidying up my engine bay whilst I got the other engine ready to toss back in.

Will be finishing things up tomorrow.

The reason I say that this may be the beginning of a long project is because now I have two engines. The old one will be torn apart and rebuilt with forged internals and whatnot in preparation for boost. This will take a long time because of funds...or lack thereof, rather.

Anyways, here are a few crappy pics I took. Questions and comments are welcome!

The empty and filthy engine bay

Ewwww, mad dirty y0!

Yeah, this bish'll make your uncles old diesel mercedes look like it's the cleanest running car around

Ahh, much better!

You should have seen the grime that was in here before!

Brad + Purple Power = Happy Miata

I'm glad this shot didn't come out blurry...not a safe spot to take pictures from

More to come!

Oh, this is where I work my 9-5. 5 Lifts in the main area, one more lift in a side area. Usually there's a car on each lift up in the air with another one underneath it, plus 3-4 others on the main floor, plus the 2 drag cars in the other room. Right now we've got 2 WRX's, 2nd gen Eclipse, 3rd gen Eclipse, 2 Stealths, at least 4 VR-4's including a Spyder, a turbocharged Prelude, and a Stratus. Every car mentioned is turbo or is in the process of being turbo'd

I like the overhead shot from up high. Some Purple Power engine degreaser splashed onto my paint work and left white streaks that required buffing compound to remove. Clutch dust is the 3rd most dirty thing known to man. I see you already have a Protege cam cover for your 1.8 swap. I hope it all goes well for you.

OK, part 2. We're done. Would have posted up earlier today, but Brad and I went to go see a kickass show. Comeback Kids, Silverstein, and Rise Against. Just got home from thtat.

Anyways. Dropping in the *new* engine was pretty straightforward, didn't have any big hang ups or anything. Another friend of ours, Shawn, dropped by and gave a hand.

More pics, less talking

Alright, she's in. Not sure what was on Brad's mind...

Little closer shot. Old valvecover, just put it on temporarily so as not to mess up the new one

The old Mill. Should have a pretty bright future ahead for this lump

Do we look confused? We probably were

New tranny fluid. Made a horrible mess and the stuff stinks

Kind of a cool shot, I thought. Took the A/C out since I never used it, and the radiator was out, hence the straight-through view

Uh oh, where am I taking the exhaust??

Ruh-roh...

This can't be good...

Yeah, I did.

Well, that's that. I'll have to take a few pictures of the new valvecover in the sunlight, it's...ummm...interesting. She's running good, just got a few things to sort out. Have to re-adjust the exhaust, it sometimes bangs on the driveshaft. Also have to get a new O2 sensor, just have a plug in the bung right now, I accidentally ripped the wires out of the old one #-o Other than that, everything seems to be just fine, no leaks (yet)

Cheers!

Oh, just now noticed the other posts!

Ricter - Dude, man, I'd LOVE to. But, the shop is unfortunetely not mine, I just work there, and there's no way in hell my boss would be kosher with that :( Brad, Shawn, my brother, and I are (hopefully) getting a house shortly that will have a 2-car garage, then we can definitely do some tech days!

FreedomGLI - It's actually and Escort cover  And it's not going back on the car because it's cracked, it leaks, and I can't weld aluminum. And it's not really a 1.8L swap that we did...my car is a '94, the new engine is from a '94, you do the math

Get that flow!! We ran noah's car open header the other night at the track. Its really not that noticeable until you press the gas. :)
Yeah, it's pretty loud, but having the turn-down actually makes it bearable. It's only temporary anyways, I'll be fabbing up a new setup within the next few weeks.
