So in my never ending quest to sell all my old own parts in order to recoup some money for my build, I came up with an idea. I have a set of oem na seats which arent in horrible condition. But i was think maybe I could breathe some modern life back into them for some lucky miata freak. So would anyone be interested in purchasing a custom pair of repadded and custom upholstered miata seats made to order. Or maybe youve got a racing seat that doesn't match and you want your passenger seat tp match. Just gauging interest. So let me know what you think guys. Thanks.

Do you have any examples of work you have done, estimated price?

I imagine shipping could be a deal breaker for me though. Probably would be easier to just have some upholstered down the street.

I have actually never done a seat before. Hence wanting to give it a shot. I've done door pannels and plenty of other stuff. But I wasn't gonna try and sell some half assed ****. I just figured since i want to try it anyways, why not see if anyone would be interested in personalized seats, so that if they actually turn out awesome they could buy em once they are finished.
And yeah shipping would be a bitch. So local would be better. Unless they end up looking fabulous and someone REALLY wants them lol. And i could even trade for their old seats and just keep flipping them.

So you want to see if anyone is interested in you making some custom seat covers for an OEM seat, even though you've never even attempted to make some before?

I took a peek at your build thread, and I'm not hating what you've done with the door panels. But I'm also not a fan. My advice would be to just make one seat, take pictures show them off, if no interest, take it as a loss. If there is some interest you at least now have the templates to start making them.

There is not going to be many people (if any) wanting to show interest (or invest) in someone who has no marketing history. Especially when you have tons of aftermarket products for people to chose from.

I'm going today to my old job (auto upholstery shop) to order materials for mine. Planning on changing my tan oem leather out for black vinyl sides back and bolsters with black suede pleated inserts, all done with green thread to compliment the exterior color of the car.

You can not however get new seat foams for a miata, at least NA and NB because they are out of production and no aftermarket company makes them. What we end up doing is sectioning out the old foam, gluing in a new block of foam and sanding it down to match the original shape. My seats are in fairly decent condition though so what i will be doing is steamimg the foam to bring some of its softness and shape back, then building up the bolsters with more foam to make it a bit more like a race seat bolster. This requires that you modify the seat cover design, but i have done it a thousand times so it wont be a problem for me.

Also, another bit of information for someone wanting to try this, miata seat covers are different from the passenger side to the driver side. If you want a perfect fit, it will require that you take both sides apart for patterns. You can use just one cover for a pattern, bit you will never get the other seat to turn out perfect that way.

^ awesome thanks for the info. I was planning on doing basically the same thing with the seat padding.

And for the haters/doubter, just to clarify, again... I am not just outright selling something that I've never done before. I am more or less looking for requests. Like if someone needed a seat, what would you do. I would do that just as a fun side project. If it doesn't turn out great, I will keep them and it's no skin off my back. If they turn out sweet and somebody wants them, I would sell them for a reasonable price.

Where did you used to work? I'm curious to see your finished pics or pics of their work, because I've been looking around for a place to re-cover my seats in red vinyl/leather.

If you gave a seat you can remove the skin, make a template and then just stitch up a new skin in any color the customer wants and sell just the skin, kind of like katskinz

I used to work at a shop out in Delmont. I now work on sliding vinyl trailer covers, but still do some auto stuff on the side.

The problem with just making a cover is that you still need the plastic clip pieces that go around the bottom of the seat pan and clip the back of the backrest cover to the front of the backrest cover, as well as the wire/wire holders for the hog rings to attach to.

When I make my covers I will be taking apart each cover for a pattern and then using all of the plastic clips from the old covers on the new covers. Katzkin and some other big companies get these clips custom made, or just use a generic clip. The problem for us regular joes is that we cant get the reproduction clips, and the generic clips dont work.

So for us, the only solution is cannibalizing our original covers to make a new set.

Good point I didn't think if that, well if you're going to do this please let us know and a price range would be nice.

Maybe we could work out a deal that I give you a non refundable deposit/down payment and you make the covers using your seat and then I could mail you my seat and the rest if the money once it's ready to be shipped out then when you receive my seat you could mail the ready ones out that day so that my car isn't out if commission too long
