So, last night after a quick drive, tons of smoke starts pouring out of the engine bay. The engine was running fine but I smelled coolant and I was afraid I may have messed something up bad, luckily I was already home.

The morning after I rushed it to the shop and it ends up being a blown heater hose. Has this happen to anyone else before?

oh yeah, but more for the guys that go turbo. That little hose gets real brittle right there so close to the exhaust. Add a turbo to the equation, and the damage potential grows exponentially. A lot of us put heat shielding fabric around the hose to protect it from the heat.

Of course, you also have to factor in the fact that the hose was probably over a decade old.

Happened to me about 3 weeks ago (hardly any steam though). I found that I had just a little pin hole in the hose that goes from the back of the head to the firewall.
