DIY Paint Job...Progress & Updates ^-^

Sup dudes (and dudettes, if any)...

Anyways, a few months ago, people were talking about a DIY paint job method using rollers...topic was here & on RDrift.com

So, I decided to try it out. I've been making very slow progress because I don't have a garage...and have been taking off pieces one at a time & bringing inside my apartment to paint (and dry & paint & dry).

Well, I'm still not finished, but thought I'd update a little...

1) So far, I've painted: gas-lid, trunk, hood, front fenders, rear center panel

2) I'm trying different mixes (ratio) of colors...its different shades on purpose, I'll recoat everything at once later

Tell me what you guys think...feedback would be appreciated (even negative ones)...THANKS!!!

im feeling that color

what kind of paint are you using?

i did this same job on my car.

rolled on rustoleum with a high density 6" roller.

only 2 coats on and i get compliments from the untrained eye. i think its funny.

i still plan on doing a couple more coats when time permits.

I'm using Rustoleum, also...but mixed my own color (combination of green & white & charcoal) (I forgot the exact names of the colors).

Yeah, I think the results are pretty amazing considering how cheap & easy it is to do. Although mine still have lots of imperfections (I haven't sanded anything yet, just coated), in pictures & from far enough away you really can't tell. I'm loving it!

By the way, when I first saw your pictures, at first I thought my ex-g/f had sold her car...I put together a Miata for her that looked similar to yours...check it out:

That was my girlfriend's car. I haven't been driving my own 'cause I'm over on my miles (I'm on a lease)...and she's been out of town for 2 months.

I want to start driving the Roadster again, but gotta get the belts fixed. Besides, I think I'm gonna try to finish the painting by this coming week. If you're off either Wed or Thurs...and have nothing better to do...hit me up & come over, we're like 10 min apart!

I hope I didn't get you in trouble w/ those customers today...hehehehe...they were probably bewildered by some random dude driving by yelling "Miatas suck!" LOL

haha nah, i had already sold the car, they were picky as **** though, OMG 150 MILES DISCOUT DISCOUNT!

yeah, ill hit you up wednesday if they let me have it off, we're moving into the new building next week though ...

Very interesting process! I like your choice of color too, very original and tasteful. How well does this paint/process adhere to the flexible urethane bumper material?

Thanks...I happen to like the color very much myself! ^-^

Well, I can't really tell you how well it will adhere just yet...since I'm still in the painting process & haven't really driven the car around.

However, I think it will hold up quite well...as this process makes you thin out the paint to almost water-like viscosity. You have to coat several times to completely cover fully. As such, each coat/layer is extremely thin & flexible. So, I think it'll be just fine.

Since you're in Hawaii...if you're contemplating this paint method, the only thing I'd be concerned about is the humidity & constant rain showers. Make sure you have an enclosed space that you can leave the car drying in for several days. Or, if you have heat lamps, you could probably shine them on the car over-night to speed up the curing process.

I love the color!!!.....I think it would look really good if you painted the hardtop and the a-pillar a gloss black.....what do you think?

LOL...okay, maybe I'm just not fully over that ex...so, anytime I see a white Miata on black wheels, it reminds me of her.

there are some HUGE threads on this on a mopar forum that escapes me right now. I have them bookmarked on another pc, however a google search should turn them up. You can get rustoleum at Home Depot. Later on in the threads (about 80 pages in) people began using a boat topside paint called Brightside. It is a polyurethane single stage with better leveling characteristics and a much higher gloss. It is a little more expensive but just like the rustoleum it can be rolled and tipped on the body. If you find the links be prepared for ALOT of reading. It took me days to take it all in. I plan to practice on my old "take stuff to the dump" truck.

The name of the forum was something like moparts or close to that. It is divided up into multiple threads because the forum software they use there limits a thread to 40 pages. A member there named Aussiedriver painted his miata black with the Brightside boat paint. It simply looks amazing.

I would think that would be a hard color to match even if you had it professionally painted. These DIY paintjobs you see here are applied with a roller, not sprayed. :wink:

its pretty much been discussed within every car forum on the net...
im planning on doing it when i get home from college (winter break)

the key to getting it shiney is in wetsanding the 2nd to last layer, then wetsanding/buffing the top layer like any normal paint process.
A lot of people didnt do that though, so it looks kinda... dull...

Actually, Rust-O-Leum offers a color called "Dark Hunter Green"....its EXTREMELY close to British Racing Green...I think it'll come out close enough.

I used that DHG mixed w/ some white & gray to get my own color.
