Bill, think ball valve for intakes.
the benefit is at WOT, there's no rod and butterfly horizontally in there creating airflow disturbance. Just a smooooooth hole. Some even pivot on needle bearings. smoooooth.
I wonder if a variable rate throttle linkage would help offset the downsides at small throttle openings.
