Are all the NA headrest speakers the same? I have a '97 M-Edition does anyone know the clearence or the thickness of a 3.5" speakers I should get? Also anyone know the diameter and clearence of the component speakers on the 97 M? Thanks for the input!

i want some dimensions for the headrest speakers like the depths i can and can't go for a speaker. since i love music it's a very high priority for me. so i am spending over what most people on here would spend on stereo stuff.also where's a good place to mount a subwoofer in these cars?

i have tried clearwater crap on 2 occasions. It's crap. Total waste of $$$ as it is no better than any of the other name brands.

I have had good luck with basic pioneer stuff over the years...but all the other brands listed above are good.

As far as a subwoofer...it's a miata...the stereo will never sound great...don't waste too much $$$ on it.

I looked at a kenwood slim powered sub for behind the passenger seat...other than that....the trunk is about it...

get any 3.5 inch speaker, you will need to cut the foam out anyway, any brand will work they are so small and muffled by the seats and they are only for rear fill it doesnt really matter
just make sure they are wired right

miatas had an issue with wiring some factory speakers would be switched like the right headrest speaker would be playing the left side music and visa versa

get some crossovers also to filter out the low stuff and even $10 speakers will sound good in there

and yeah you need 2 pairs, right and left for both pasenger and driver seats

I've been using Blaupunkt GTX 352 for about 2 years. For a while, they were my only speakers because my door speaker wiring was messed up. Sound great for what it is. I bought it at a local Fry's store after demoing them on their speaker wall, so you can probably try them before buying.

Reviving this thread.

I bought a set of 3.5" infinity speakers for my '92. When I took my factory ones out they were oval speakers in a square frame. From what I've read on old m.net threads the later years came with round speakers that simply press fit into the foam and mounted to a piece of plastic or something.

I know I can wire these up using the factory harness in each seat. Is there a special (proper) way I should go about doing it so I don't 1) short anything out 2) ruin my factory harness.

I'm not much of an electrical guy so I need a little help  Thanks in advance

If you short out your speaker wire you'll just stop hearing any music at all. And once you fix the short, the music will come back. It's not like you'll blow fuses or anything.

Years ago, I had the music suddenly stop on my 97. But if I slid the seat all the way back, it would come back. So I took the seat out and poked around. The headrest speaker wire on the driver's seat had become caught in the seat slider teeth. It got all mangled. When I untangled and taped the wires, I never had a shorting out problem again. So I ran the speaker wire up into one of the holes in the bottom of the seat pan, along the bottom of the seat, and out the very front of the seat cushion. Never got the wire caught again.

The wiring is pretty forgiving. Don't be afraid.

I don't understand the clearwater debate. nobody is posting why they are bad, but I do see why they'd be good since they were made specifically for headrest speakers.

can anyone explain both sides of the coin on these?

I like the idea of getting a good speaker that's actually made for our stock headrest locations.

thanks.

From I read on old those m.net threads I mentioned, almost any 3.5" speaker will fit just fine as seen here. And from I understand the later years came with round speakers instead of the oval ones like these . If you want to get good sound out of any speaker you'll need to hook it/them up to an amp.

I can't comment one way or the other on the CW speakers though since I've never had them.

I didn't think it would be a daunting task by any stretch. I called a friend yesterday who professionally installs car stereos to ask and see what tips he had so I could do it myself. After a few minutes of talking, he offered to do it and said he'd charge me the cost of a six pack to install them, so I figured why not :woolery:

I can't tell you why some people say CW's are crap, but I can tell you I have them and really like them. They go way too loud for what I use them for, so I can't see any downside to them. Personally, I use them for rear fill, so they are turned way low. They fit without issue, the can handle whatever I throw at them, and they sound good. (Highs are pretty bright and they don't bog with reasonable bass levels. I have crossed mine over for safety's sake) You will only find a handful of people who say they are crap, so I'd say as in many things such as this, it's safe to side with the majority.
