I'm on the market for this cool new Alpine CDA-9857 head unit that just came out this month.

It has a "BioLite display" that's supposedly optimized for bright-light visibility (i.e. top down in a Roadster). And it's got a built-in iPod circuit so all you have to do is plug in your iPod and all the info is displayed on the screen.

MSRP is $400. Crutchfield is $350. They seem to be going for about $260 on eBay.

Anyone know any angles to get one for less than eBay?

you should go for the 9861. Has optical out in case you wanted to use DSP (alpine h701 xover, eq, blah blah) and take advantage of toslink. plus it plays dvds.

i wonder if this one has auto volume compesation. i know the older pioneers do, but not sure about the alpines.. that definately looks like a great deck. also for the price.

No auto volume compensation. I have the step down non bio-lite display version of this. It's a nice headunit, but Alpines are declining in quality. The Bass engine is less adjustable than on my last unit, and this new one doesn't have time correction which saddens me

Bill, remember if you buy your alpine online anywhere that's not crutchfield or a big name store (ie discounted) you wont get a warranty other than what the store (may?) provide.

I need that. The display in my Alpine CDA-9851 is craptacular. During the day sunlight washes out the display making it impossible to read and it won't dim at night (display is too bright) even though I've got it properly hooked up to the dimmer lead.

the biolite washes out in direct sunlight too. i have the cda-9855. so unless alpine changed it somehow for the 9857, i doubt you can read it in sunlight.
