is it normal to have a noticeable amount of heat on the shifter...i can feel it through the shift boot...it is always there, whether i am on a "spirited" drive or tooling around town....i never felt it on my Toyota but it had a much thicker shift boot...so has it always been there and i just never knew, or is something wrong?

perfect...
except where would i find said "Roebuck" if i were in need of new boots?

thanks
Roebuck is a Mazda dealership (can't remember where). Just find your own local one, or order online from Trussville Mazda (just Google for it).

i just replaced them. IIRC, planetmiata actually has the best prices.

if not them, i know there is a vendor that sells both upper and lower boots together. they're the cheapest. and that vendor, i think, is either a cr.net sponsor or a m.net sponsor.

anyway, hopefully some of that will be helpful.

I had to replace my upper shift boot a few years ago but waited until spring.

It was nice having the extra heater during the 6:00 commutes to work :)
