use a thin piece of fabric

slip the fabric underneath the knob. slide it back and forth until a portion of it is fully underneath

then pull, and it should just pop out

I pull the crank off as much as I can with some fabric underneath it then push the clip off with a flathead screw driver. Sometimes I push off the ends, other times I can get the screwdriver in the hoop part of the clip. Just take your time and be gentile.

Yea it does suck to have one of those smack your eye... I swear whoever invented those retainers made them so if you take them out they take your eye with them lol

I use an old wash cloth or something similar and just work it back and forth under the base of the knob. The clip just pops of and usually the cloth catches it so it doesnt fly off.
