I'm 35 so I don't pay anywhere near what you will have to pay but Miata insurance should be pretty reasonable. It has a low theft rate, repairs are less expensive than most cars, on paper the car stats appear benign. (4 cyl with a tad over 100hp) and unlike a WRX, Miatas have a good rep of safety/low accident rate with the insurance companies.

Call some Insurance companies and get some quotes. Remember to compare apples to apples and get quotes for the EXACT same levels of coverage. Since you have a clean record, I'd stick with a major carrier like State Farm, Farmers, USAA, etc. even if you end up paying a little bit more. They're worth it if you ever need them.

Also, look for discounts like A student, automatic payments and additional insurance discounts. Get Homeowner or Renter insurance and a life insurance policy with the same carrier and you can save big $$$. The life insurance for a 18yo would be cheap and the premiums may be a wash with the discount.

As for the full coverage, realize insurance companies will only reimburse on resale value and make little to no consideration for mods. If you have a lein on the car you will need to carry full coverage. If you own the car outright, the choice is yours.

If totalling the car would put you in a huge bind but you can afford the premiums of full coverage then get it. If not, take your chances with basic liability. Sock the savings away into the bank so if you do wreck your car, you have $$$ set aside just in case.

i'm 21 with 38 points on my record. $497.63 a month for liability only.

the best way to figure it out is to call an insurance agent. its good to have your driving record handy (if you have one). you can obtain it from your local dmv for like $5.

also dont trust any quotes you get online, they generally DON'T review your record to give you the quote. They call you an hour or two later after you try to sign up and tell you "well because of these speeding tickets, etcc.., your actual quote is X." (added about $175 to my online quote)

call and talk to them on the phone.

Mines just liability coverage on my car and van, about $130 a month. Will be less next spring when my speeding tickets are dropped off my insurance.

yeah i dont know where all theselow ball estimates are comming from i have only recently paid less than 200 a month for liability. Even with a clean record. At one point i paid 365 dollars a month for bare minimum liability on one vehicle. not fun when hyou only make about 600 dollars a month.:( Insurance companies will screw you as much as they can.

how does the american points system work?

for example here in UK, you get fixed points per offence..

speeding in a speed limit within a reasonable amount (ie 40mph in a 30, 65 in a 50, 85 in a 70) you get 3 points.

for doing bigger speeds you can get 6 points.

once you have toted up 12 points, you are banned!!

points take 3 years to come off your record..

or alternatively they can just ban you for periods of time.. i got banned for 3 months for speeding on a 'freeway'

my insurance is around $247 a month fully comprehensive cover

Back in the day mine was about $300 per month, but thats because my license was suspended twice, DOH! Too many points in too many months will do that to you.

I have since been enjoying autocross, hehehe much safer, and much cheaper than a ticket.

Actually it varies from state to state. Some states don't even use a points system. Texas just recently adopted a points system. Not sure how it works though.

The thing is, in Texas, it is actually rather easy to keep tickets off your record. I've had more tickets than I can remember and I've had 0 actually go on my record. At fault accidents can't be kept off your record if there is any insurance claim or police report. They stay on for three years.

In Texas, once a year you can take a Defensive Driving course to keep a ticket off. Basically you can use your "get out of jail free card" once every 12 months. If you get another ticket, you can often request Deferred Ajudication (Probabtion). As long as you don't get another ticket during your probationary period (around 6 months) in that municipality your ticket is dismissed. You can be on probation in several different cities at the same time.

You might ask why this is. Well, you pay a part or a full amount of the fine to the city that ticketed you. The state gets some of the money from your DD Class as well. As long as they get paid, they could care less about the insurance companies. It's a win-win situation for the cities and speeders and a lose situation for the Insurance companies.

I can't wait until all of my points get dropped...last time I checked, my insurance is over 4,000$ a year, wouldn't want to know what it'd be if it were mine, not my under my Dad's name still...

Never been ticketed in the Miata, knock on wood, over 1 year of ownership and only been pulled once :)

back when my miata was red, i got pulled over everywhere. it got impounded 3 times... because my license was suspended (there's no public transportaion here, so a suspended license is hard to work around, and i'm not gonna ride a bike in 8" of snow). now that its black, i don't get a single look from cops.

i'm not exactly sure the specifics of the oregon points system. all i know is different driving offenses equate to different points values.

the first ticket, or your first in 5 years, can be voided if you take a driving class. otherwise the points drop off your record in 3 years.
