MK4 VW TDI's

Looking into picking one of these up (More specifically a Golf) to commute in, can't beat 1000+kms on a tank of diesel.

Most of the used ones up here are pretty high mileage (300k+ kms) and selling for about 4-5k. I know about the VW issues that come up, but am willing to live with it as long as it doesn't affect driveability. Like if a window doesn't roll down doesn't really affect me, just don't want to be stranded in the middle of the road all of a sudden.

How hard are these to work on? If I have to bring it to a tech for a simple oil change or brakes etc, then that might be a big deal breaker. I'm a big DIYer after owning the Miata, but then our cars are one of the easiest cars to work on.

Anyone owned one of these and have any input?
