so in 2006 my wife and i were looking for a car to autocross in. we had previously purchased an 87 CRX but that didn't work out so well. so we set the following criteria:

$3500 and under
94+ miata
A package
white or black..

a few months later, in the early summer, we found a white 94 a package in Virginia beach. yeah, it needed tires. and yeah, it needed a top.. it wasn't pretty, but it fit our criteria so we picked it up:

we brought it home, put on some new tires, (BFG traction T/A) and i cleaned the heck out of it:

we began running it in autocrosses in ES with the SCCA. i know i've got a pic somewhere 'round here..

we drove it for a while, and enjoyed the simplicity of the car as it was stock. but we were sick and tired of getting wet, using up duct tape and staples for that leaky roof.

$170 later and a few hours with friends, ebay top installed:

hurray! less wet..

and then winter was coming. also at this point my wife decided she didn't like autocrossing.. too much "waiting around".. so what does every track miata need? hardtop:

and because they were sitting around, i thought why not? (15x6 +35 Black Racing BR-R's)

those are all nice and dandy, but we needed something for track. picked up these epic beasts of OEM-ness and pulled off some super-realistic fake TE-37's in mag blue:

DSCF4778 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

mounted up some true race tires; Falken Azenis.. look, it's the money that we had here and we could drive on them on the street so we didn't need a trailer at the time..

DSCF4806 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

pin stripes aren't required for race cars.. so they were finally removed..

DSCF4935 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

what is needed for racecar? chevron stripes... and a roll bar..

at some point during this whole ordeal, since we were still running ES, we decided to replace them 140k shocks with tokico illuminas. didn't do much to cure the dive, but what is a racecar build thread without a few action shots???

at this point my wife was starting to be badass on track and was "recommended" for some upgraded safety gear.. fine.. whatevs...

Where can I find wheels like that?
you can't. they were last made in the very early 90's... moving on..

in this next picture, we see that the BR-R's have made there way back on the car, and it has FINALLY been lowered with a set of FM springs and swaybars to compliment the tokico illuminas. also, in this picture is the first appearance of the shiny hood..

DSCF1358 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

it also looks like i still cared about the cleanliness of the car...

DSCF1365 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

because we're cheap and use all our monies for track time, we got a free borla dual exhaust! yeah, it doesn't fit so right, but meh. free is free and it sounded great..

DSCF1481 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

also because we're cheap we dropped $300 on some used Enkei's with equally used A032r's.

DSCF1482 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

more tracktime..

DSCF1613 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

and more tracktime:

DSCF1624 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

and finally, arriving for her instructors training clinic weekend.. nothing like VIR in February.. and trailers make track life so much easier...

airbags? we don't need no airbags! pulled that stock wheel and dropped in a used Nardi with a first gen RX7 hub. pulled the 94+ dash and dropped in a 90-93 for that oh-so clean look. and also used some genuine suede to cover up the top part where a nasty crack was.. also, note the diy door pulls.. did i forget to mention we are cheap? and we like our leg room..

DSCF2075 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

first time with the "x"..

DSCF2082 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

finally time for some permanent numbers. ditchin them magnetics and tape for some meatballs.. i mean, who doesn't like meatballs???

DSCF2089 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

i think this A032R has met it's end.. time for some replacements..

0620100809 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

this would turn out to be an epic morning.. of epic sadness.. leaving for work, i took this picture:

008 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

on the way to work, this would happen:

002 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

that's not TOO bad.. oh wait, dammit!!!

004 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

meanwhile, shorty console from Autokonexion anyone??

0928102040 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

oak tree at vir anyone??

045 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

oh yeah, as you'll notice we are still running the same wheels that had them A032r's. i got some bridgestone RE01's for free.. like i said, we're cheap.. hehee

DSCF2458 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

miata cam 005 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

0206111552 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

0305111851 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

shutup and turn your head; exh-intake is blue line. stock is red:

dynograph1 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

matchy-matchy for $600 total? HECK YEAH!!!

memoryfabseats 004 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

memoryfabseats 007 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

wife and i re-did the door panels with fake suede.

memoryfabseats 008 by fragile_this_side_up_retro_club, on Flickr

Awesome build thread! Is there, by any chance, a DIY on how to replace your soft top? Mine could use some TLC!

I am really impressed, you are going about your mods the perfect way. Track time to figure the car out, fixing the driver THEN modding. Well played!

I did the bumper cut out a couple of weeks ago myself - love it, looks soo much cleaner. I love the way you're going about sculpting the car on track - & I really dig the way it's lookin'! Very nice!
