Most recent synopsis:

Noise sounds like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE6_WqhQx08 - this is pretty spot on to what I'm experiencing.
and:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mREL2Wdc6ZQ - same car, another vid.

Being told that not only was it the harmonic balancer, but apparently driving it under that condition for the couple miles home that it was, even with the engine off, coasting half the way, the key tore up the slot in the shaft for it... I'll need a new crank in addition to my harmonic balancer.. :(

Regretting not getting the tools to pull the balancer off myself.. now doubting the report as it was "put back together" the same way as when I brought it in...

Sorry for the bump, just an update in case anyone finds this thread through the search function...

Apparently previous owner botched his timing job by installing the key in backwards... after the keyway wore down, he JB welded it and sold the car to me without so much as hinting at these issues... The noise was in fact due to a worn keyway, which was welded up with the timing cog and the key as well... This has been welded for approx 2 years and a little over 40,000 miles... As for the noise, I ended up equating it to half a dozen fist sized rocks being thrown in the dryer and tumbled...
