does anyone know if you can tell if a car is an r-package just by the vin#? i know you can call mazda but they are closed today and i was wanting to take a look at this car for sale at this small dealership about 2 hours from my house. i suspect the car may be a one of the r-package vehicles and at $4900 for 80k miles with a straight looking body and a clean carfax i'm pretty interested. when i get there i'll do some crawling around underneath to check for damage or paint.

No there is no way to tell w/o calling Mazda. There is no specific VIN character or combination of characters that denotes an R-package. Mazda looks up their records to determine exactly how the car was configured when new. There's nothing really that special about an R-package car value wise and they only command a small premium given the right buyer. Vehicle condition is much more important when shopping for used Miatas. It is easy to replicate an R-package and many R-package cars are no longer in original condition given their age.

R package cars were base model 5 spd NAs with bilstein shocks, LSD, hollow spoke 94-97 factory wheels, front air dam/rear lip, and trunk lip spoiler. Only option on the R Package was the R package stipe kit.
No PS/PW or A/C.

Not much else to it. A dealership could easily make a base model an R Package within a day.

i know the r-package options could be installed on a regular miata, i just think i found one from a dealer that doesn't know it's an r-package. and from looking online it appears that all the r-package models have an R in the vin. so if i can get the R for the same price as a regular model then i would definitely go for it just for the torsen alone, suspension and lips are nice bonus.
