I'm looking for a new exhaust but I want something with a deep sound, from what I've heard out there on youtube and google it's seems to be a toss-up between the two. If anyone else out there has something I've missed please let me know because I'm exhausted from searching!

Also another quick question ... straight pipe or free-flow cat, what's the trade off on sound vs the gain?

Long story short is new JR header coming and current exhaust is 13 year old factory stock that I couldn't reuse if I wanted thanks to the shop that replaced my old cat 7 years ago that welded it to the stock manifold, plus it's buzzy as hell!

Thanks in advance guys!

No replies???

Oh well, I went ahead and ordered the Magnaflow today from NOPI along with a free-flow cat. Right now the Magnaflow exhaust is on sale for $345 which is by far the cheapest I've seen it anywhere and if you use JAN10 for the code you'll save another $10.

Hopefully this will give me the sound I'm looking for ... I wanted something deeper and not so raspy but still quiet enough during normal driving. Everything should be here this week and I've already got my JR header ready to go in so hopefully by next weekend I'll be able to post a pic and maybe a sound clip!

There's a guy in my club with a dual Borla on his 99. In the low range it has a really deep sound to it and sounds good thru all gears.

Here's the link to the sounds of their website, http://www.magnaflow.com/04sound/04sport.asp. The best one to my ears is the drive by, everything else is pretty low RPM's which is quiet. But this is what I was looking for, quiet while poking around and then loud and deep enough at WOT for people to wonder what just passed them!

Magnaflow's Miata exhaust system has been known to be pretty loud as well as make some back-firing/popping noises. Bryan had it on his 97 at one point and quickly got rid of it, but he's one picky guy about his exhaust sound, so its understandable.
I would suggest having your own system made using a Magnaflow muffler and tip, but use the biggest resonator you can find...lol

I have this same magnaflow exhaust, and other than the tip, I like it alot. Nice sound when driving around town at part throttle.

My car is sc'd. Without the cat, the car was too loud for me, when driving at more than part throttle.

With the stock cat in, I like the sound, but it might be just a bit too quiet for some. At high rpm, @15psi, there is also a noticable jet like whoosh, from the exhaust. reminds me a bit of a ford station wagon my cousin used to drive...
There is however, still some drone at highway speeds.
I have had no popping noises.

I have been reluctant to purchase a high flow cat, since I believe the noise level will go up substantially. I'd be interested in hearing how your unit sounds with the high flow cat Denny..

That third gear video is nice, that thing must pull like a freight train!

I was debating the bigger tip but currently there's a 3 1/2" on mine and I couldn't really see it with a 3". I ruled out the straight pipe pretty quick from what sound clips I could muster up, figured a free-flow would provide enough but if that proves wrong I'll just be out $89 and can go with a factory cat.

I've had the car 10 years now, hopefully one day soon I'll have a S/C on it, that's been my plan all along!

Oreo do you have a pic of the back end of your car? I'm curious to how the tip fills out the valance.

just took a couple of pics.

when installed, the exhaust tip was not in the center of the opening. it was rubbing up against the bumper, causing alot of noise. I added this coat hangar affair (it was supposed to be temporary) to pull the exhaust to the right, to center it.

I was debating the bigger tip
I personally would prefer a smaller tip, but I am getting used to it.

Thanks Oreo ... that looks good in my eyes! Like I said, I have a 3 1/2" tip welded on the factory exhaust now and I really couldn't see going down to a 2 1/2" or 3" tip without it looking funny to me. I know I could have had a bigger tip welded back on but same goes if the 4" looks insanely huge to me.

Here's a pic of the back of mine, to me 3 1/2" is perfect!

I had a brainstorm Candoo which was made with a huge resonator and a magnaflow.

it was a little quiet but it had a great sound.

horrible drone on the highway though.

Thanks, it's a high gloss bright red ... I also have a medium gloss JDM red crinkle finish that will be switched over after the header install so this one will be for sale then. I bought this from Keystone Powdercoating in PA off of an Ebay auction, www.keystonepowdercoating.com. The best powdercoating guy in Memphis felt uneasy about polishing the letters like I wanted and then I ran across Keystone's auction and it's exactly what I was looking for.

Here's a couple of 1.6 valve covers in blue that's on their site now if your interested in seeing them, turnaround is pretty quick too if they don't have a 1.8 in stock and you send them yours if you catch them running a batch through.

You can see other colors by clicking the other auctions. I was so-so on the high gloss, thought it could have been done better so that's when I sent them my core back and had it done in the crinkle and it looks excellent, they even sent me a free t-shirt to make up for it, can't beat that!!!

Wow!
After listening to those exhaust clips, I think I might put my foot in my mouth (in reference to the sound). I like it. Kinda makes me feel a lot better about buying a Magnaflow muffler when I piece together an exhaust system for my car.
